About the California Fire Museum

In 2003, local business people and fire safety experts met to discuss and form a fire museum and safety learning center in the Southern California area.

The coalition consisted of Dave Hubert, retired Fire Captain/California State Firemen’s Association/CSFA Steamer Team; Randy Marsile, Past President Orange County Fire Services Association; Don Croucher, retired Fire Engineer and recognized fire historian; Darrell Gilbert, antique fire apparatus collector/restorer; Mike McDonald, owner of Western Heavy Equipment.

The Opportunity of a Lifetime

With the closing of the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station and the forming of the Orange County Great Park, a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity had come to our attention.

The Great Park has divided the former base into segments. The segments will include: sports parks, an agricultural area, open space parks, a memorial park, recreational parks, plus 156 acres will be dedicated for museums and cultural attractions. After many years of work, the California Fire Museum – Safety Learning Center is now one of many community programs to be included in the Great Park.

The Great Park is located on the center of the former base in close proximity to the Irvine Transportation Center serving the Metrolink and Amtrak trains. The Great Park is centrally located in Orange County, close to the I-5 and 405 freeways, plus the 133 and 241 toll roads.

Our plans are to highlight the children’s life and fire safety programs, plus exhibits of historical firefighting memorabilia, which will serve regional families with fire heritage and safety education.

The California Fire Museum Board of Directors and the Board members of the Great Park have been working together for the past six years to work out the details.

Currently, the California Fire Museum is seeking both private and corporate sponsorship donations in order for the museum open.

A Continued Pledge to the Community

In the meantime, the California Fire Museum will continue to solicit sponsors, memberships, donations and research our building possibilities.
